That other howlybag at Public address Public Address | Yellow Peril has taken umbrage at our attempts to define ourselves as New Zealanders, not Europeans. She quotes a fairly difficult definition test
First, the group must have a name for itself. This is not trivial; a lack of a name reflects an insufficiently developed collective identity.
We are New Zealanders
Second, the people in the group must believe in a common ancestry [my emphasis]...
Yeah we came from farming & settler stock going back generations. Our family memories are entwined with the development of New Zealand as a nation
Third, the members of the group must share historical memories...
My piligrimage to Gallipoli where New Zealand realised it could not rely on an all knowing parent to take care of it is a pilgrimage shared by many
Fourth, the group must have a shared culture, generally based on a combination of language, religion, laws, customs, [etc].
Ever watched a rugby game and been proud of the All Blacks. Do you know what number 8 wire is.
Fifth, the group must feel attachment to a specific piece of territory, which it may or may not actually inhabit.
Nu Zilin - got a problem with that
Sixth and last, the people in the group have to think of themselves as a group in order to constitute an ethnic community; that is,they must have a sense of their common ethnicity. The group must be self-aware."
Yeah - we are New Zealanders - not europeans. they are as different from us as chalk and cheese or rugby & soccer
So I guess that means those of us who define themselves as New Zealanders are not racist bastards because we do not think our culture is European.
